Cost of living up 0.2 per cent in October

Committee blasts city administrator in Lompoc hearing

Bevilacqua testifies before the Committee for Responsive Government in a probe into firing of Lompoc community development chief Nicholas Bevilacqua. He cites preference for city manager form of government and says resigning had been considered before his October dismissal by City Administrator Gene Wahlers. Tension rises as Wahlers and aide Dustin Griffith skip appearances. The panel schedules a new meeting for next Tuesday at 7 30 p.m and may invite Wahlers for another public hearing.

Foreign aid alive again in temporary continuation

Both House and Senate approved a resolution to fund foreign aid at 2.67 billion dollars per year until December 8. The measure authorizes continued spending by the Defense Department, Office of Economic Opportunity, and the District of Columbia government.

Jackson declares candidacy for Democratic nomination

Sen Henry M. Jackson of Washington formally entered the race for the Democratic presidential nomination and announced plans for the New Hampshire Florida Illinois and Wisconsin primaries. He conceded New Hampshire to Sen Edmund Muskie, noting he does not expect to win there but hopes for a strong showing. He spoke at a crowded Senate Caucus Room news conference.

Mumps Shut Schools Across Valley as Absences Rise

Widespread mumps sickness keeps many elementary students home across the Valley. Fillmore and El Camino report high absentee rates with 18 to 22 students out daily at times. Sacramento Senate approves 5 percent state employee pay raise

The Senate voted 28 to 5 to grant a 5 percent retroactive raise to 150000 state employees excluding college faculty, sending the Moscone measure to the Assembly. The boost would take effect only if taxes rise by at least 26.8 million dollars. Reagan vetoed a 5 percent raise for state workers and cut a 10 percent faculty boost.

Former Santa Barbara sheriff captain disputes riots charges

Joel B. Honey fires back at 11 charges from Sheriff John Carpenter over Isla Vista riots. He claims a law enforcement power struggle caused the chaos and injuries and seeks a public hearing amid his firing. His lawyer accuses fellow pilots of shifting blame and notes alleged acts to remove the sheriff.
