Bear fire containment narrows in San Bernardino Mountains

San Bernardino up to 3,300 firefighters aimed to encircle the 81 square mile Bear fire as winds eased and humidity rose. The blaze burned 52,500 acres of watershed and timber valued at 16 million dollars, with 54 homes lost since Friday and six trucks deployed near Barrett Creek. A separate Cucamonga Canyon fire reached 65 percent containment at 2,600 acres as Gov. Reagan declared the county a disaster area.

Large arms cache found in push into Cambodia

About 7,000 South Vietnamese troops backed by tanks and helicopters crossed into Cambodia in a two pronged assault. They uncovered a 254 ton cache of 85mm ammunition six miles inside Cambodia marking the largest Indochina war artillery cache. Eleven Communist fighters were killed in a post discovery clash with no Vietnamese casualties.

Lompoc Considers Deferred Compensation for City Staff

The Lompoc City Council will weigh a resolution to add a deferred compensation plan to the fringe benefits package for all full time city employees and council members. The plan would withhold salary portions into a fund, reduce current income tax, and invest for retirement with repayments in installments. Wahlers says it will aid recruiting and retention of personnel.
