Seven fires in Riverside and San Bernardino counties burned over 41 000 acres of brush and timber. the Bear fire in the San Bernardino National Forest grew to 35 000 acres and destroyed one home while Santa Ana winds fanned flames at 60 to 70 mph. Evacuations were ordered for Smiley Park and Igos, and the Cucamonga fire, rekindled from the Lytle Creek blaze, forced firefighting on rugged terrain with horse and mule packs. Over 1 000 men fought the Bear blaze. 65 worked the Cucamonga fire with 150 en route. no injuries were reported.
