Tug of war over water in Santa Ynez Valley

At Santa Ynez River Water Conservation District One meeting, engineer William Ellis warned of gradual groundwater depletion in the Santa Ynez Uplands Basin while advising a possible water service for Pepper Tree Ranch. Board members debated a six month deadline, with concerns over water rights, future master planning, and potential annexation or a private water company. Additional notes cited manganese in Cachuma water and 46 anchor blocks laid along the transmission line to San Lucas Bridge.

Frank I. Grossman 82 died Wednesday at Lom poc District Hospital. He lived in Santa Monica until two months ago and was active in the Santa Monica Odd Fellows Lodge. Born October 10 1887 in New Jersey, he is survived by son Lawrence Grossman of Lom poc. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery Santa Maria. Local arrangements by McPeek Family Mortuary.

Reagan taps Orr for State General Services post

Gov Ronald Reagan named Verne Orr, Motor Vehicles Director, as State Director of General Services replacing Andrew Lolli. James W Chapman Jr., deputy director of Motor Vehicles since 1965, will serve as acting director. Both posts pay 30000 a year. Orr, 53, previously led a Pasadena savings and loan association before joining the administration in 1967.

Plan approved for Hans Christian Andersen Park near Solvang

The County Park Commission approved a three phase plan for Hans Christian Andersen Park near Solvang. George Adams outlined a Danish motif exhibit for a children’s area and road work is underway. Phase two adds picnic and barbecue areas while phase three covers sports facilities, riding areas and a baseball field.

Lompoc Valley Association to Meet on Educational Opportunities

The Lompoc Valley Association for Retarded Children will hold a general meeting Tuesday at 7 30 p m at Fillmore School, discussing Lompoc Valley s Educational Opportunities for the Retarded Ages 3 to 103. Teachers from preschool to adult activities will speak and a Q A session will follow. Christmas Parade entries extend deadline to November 20 via Lom poc Chamber of Commerce.

YMCA Junior Rodeo Promises Big Local Turnout in Lompoc

A large Sunday crowd is expected at 1 p m for the first annual YMCA Junior Rodeo at La Salle Canyon Stables in Lompoc featuring 97 youth contestants. Events include calf riding roping and barrel racing with nine silver buckles plus all around buckles for top riders. Local youths like Karl Silva Lee McDonald and Johnny McDonald compete, with sponsors from Central Coast Realty Pico s Western Wear and others. Concessions and ambulance service will support the event.

Second policeman dies of wounds in Chicago gunfight

A second officer died from wounds after a Thursday gunfight in Chicago that left six officers injured and two youths wounded. Police said youth Spurgeon J. Winters, 19, was killed, and Fred Rappa port, 36, died earlier. Winters companion Lance S. Bell was wounded. Police found Black Panther literature on the youths.
