Drainage ditch issue worries Lompoc parents

In Lompoc the Miguelito Channel built in 1952 is now seen as unsafe by southwest residents. The unfenced, algae stained trough along Olive Avenue to the Santa Ynez River spans 2.9 miles, threatening children as housing encroaches and sidewalks are rare. Health officials say green runoff poses no danger, but parents push for better barriers and maintenance as schools plan walk routes near the ditch.

The panel asked the city to write County Planning Commission noting ranchers needs and concerns over preserves on valuable industrial real estate. The Beattie and Heinrichs filings seek ag preserve status and rezoning from suburban to general agricultural districts. A spokesman said preserves are essential for ranchers to survive.
