Carter approves Alaska gas pipeline route with Alcan plan
President Carter gave final approval for a privately financed 4700 mile Alaska gas line to flow through Canada to the lower 48, with two legs to Antioch California and Dwight Illinois. The project costs at least 10 billion dollars and could finish by 1983.

Burning at stake scene photographed for class assignment
Investigators say two Cabrillo High School youths staged a stake burning on Highway 1 north of Mission Hills for a class photo. They found no foul play and believe the act was planned as a harmless exercise though the use of fire was judged to be poor judgment. An oil company employee extinguished a brush fire before responders arrived.

Man Sentenced in Brawl Case In Lompoc
Randy Paul Spring, 20, of 1516 East North Avenue, was sentenced to 45 days in county jail for resisting arrest during a September 11 melee with police. Judge Terrill F Cox ordered immediate jail time after a probation hearing. Spring pleaded guilty as part of a larger incident in which five were arrested while police investigated underage drinking. two officers were injured but recovered. two other defendants face trial November 14.
