Israeli air strikes hit Rashidiyeh refugee camp near Tyre

Israeli warplanes bombed the Rashidiyeh refugee camp south of Tyre in a second raid in three days. Palestinian officials report extensive damage and possible casualties while Israel says no planes were hit. Rockets and anti aircraft fire accompanied the attack as border tensions rise.

Proposal may open way for VW housing boom

The Lompoc Advisory Committee recommended land use designations in Vandenberg Village that could permit 100 new housing units annually for 10 years. If approved by the County Planning Commission and Board, Ebbert’s development firm could build cluster homes on an 11 acre parcel and more on a 95 acre tract, with DR 14 zoning for some central shopping land.

Early this morning a police officer helped a two year old found wandering near Westlake Park. The child, uninjured, was handed to guardians after curfew hours containment.

Two Teens Freed in Yenney Slaying Case

Two of three suspects in the Yenney murder and rape case near Oxnard were released after the victim could not identify them. Paul Yenney Jr. was killed during the Oct. attack on Linda Fiene who remains in serious condition. Ruben L. Torres remains eligible for adult prosecution with a preliminary hearing set for Monday.

Shooting suspect due in court in Lompoc

Miller Norris 45 of Sacramento charged with attempted murder in the Vandenberg Village shooting appeared in Lompoc Municipal Court for a plea. Bail was raised from 25000 to 50000 by Judge Terrill F. Cox. Victim David Bruce McPherson 26, of 4250 Polaris Ave, remained in the ICU at Lompoc Hospital in improved condition with a shotgun recovered from the scene at Village Inn parking lot. Further details and motive were not disclosed.

Suspects in Schleyer murder case captured

Dutch authorities say they captured at least one Baader Meinhof member in Amsterdam after a night shootout left two suspects wounded. Identified were Christian Michael Wackernagel 26 and Gert Richard Schneider 28. Police say the Red Army Faction expanded its activities to Holland and note the men had been under observation since the Maurits Caransa kidnapping. Three policemen were injured but in satisfactory condition.

Water main breakage disrupts 30 Mission Hills homes on Via Lato

An official from Mission Hills Water Co. said a 12 inch main break caused outages to about 30 homes along Via Lato beginning Thursday morning. James Smitherman predicted full service would resume by 11 a.m. repairs focus on tree roots, with street clean up and yard restoration after work.

Lompoc Students Meet State Reading Benchmarks in 1976-77

A state report shows Lompoc reading scores for grades two and three near and above statewide percentiles, while grade six and twelve results mostly track similar districts. Sixth grade and twelfth grade math and spelling lag, with seventh grade performance described as at the bottom of the expected range.
