Residents clash over city trees planted on front yards

Lompoc Council Bans Motorbikes Near Homes Citywide

The Lompoc City Council approved a first reading of an ordinance banning motorbikes within a quarter mile of homes and sensitive sites. Police may ticket offenders, but street riding and private driveway tuning are still allowed. A 20 to 25 acre river bottom area north of McLaughlin Road will be opened for organized recreation. The measure must pass a second reading and take effect about a month later.

Ford and aides reject recession label for current economy

White House press secretary Ron Nessen said President Ford and advisers view the economy as serious but not in a recession. They cite inflation and the lack of a formal recession declaration by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Ford heads to Asia November 17 with stops in Japan, South Korea and Siberia.

Mansfield assures president of Democratic cooperation

Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield assured President Ford that the new Democratic Congress will cooperate on inflation and recession. He said a veto proof Congress is impossible and stressed cooperation to pass about 40 bills, including energy and economic measures, during the home rule session opening Nov 18. Ford and Mansfield met 45 minutes to discuss plans and budget decisions ahead of Ford's Far East trip.
