Amchitka Cannikin Blast Set Amid Protests

Scientists and reporters head to Amchitka Island as the United States plans a five megaton underground nuclear test tentatively for Saturday. Greenpeace and other groups protest while observers prepare offshore. The device sits 5,875 feet underground in a cavern shaft 6,150 feet deep with 5.5 million pounds of stemming used to seal the shaft. Radiation monitors will be stationed with the nearest village 280 miles away and Adak 180 miles distant.

Supreme Court No Block on Amchitka Nuclear Test

Two American deaths in Vietnam last week lowest in years

UPI reports two Americans were killed in action in Vietnam last week, the lowest weekly toll since U.S. combat began in 1965. The command also noted 63 wounded, the fewest in six weeks, with totals since 1961 showing 45,586 deaths and 302,167 wounded.

Action postponed on two California tax measures

In Sacramento a Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee delayed votes on two tax bills aimed at closing a $6.8 billion deficit and aiding senior citizens with property tax relief. Senator Walter D. Stiern proposed raising $364 million this fiscal year through payroll withholding. he requested more discussion with committee members before proceeding.
