Aid Sought to Extend Foreign Aid Until Decision Made

House leaders pressed a plan to keep foreign aid flowing through the end of the current session. Chairman George Mahon urged passage of a resolution to extend funding until late 1971 or possibly January 3, 1972. The Senate had earlier voted to kill the program, but committees discussed a compromise to revive it at about 2 to 2.5 billion dollars annually through June 30.

House Banking panel backs retroactive wage approval

The House Banking Committee voted 16 14 to require the Pay Board to approve retroactive wage increases frozen during the current economy slowdown. The panel backed broadening Nixon administration powers and extending control through May 1, 1973, with retroactive pay for pre freeze contracts.

Wholesale prices ease for October amid Nixon price freeze

The Labor Department reports a 0.1 percent drop in the wholesale price index for all commodities in October, the second straight decline since Nixon's price freeze. Seasonally adjusted data show a 0.1 percent rise, while raw farm products rose 0.7 percent and processed foods fell 0.4 percent. The industrial commodities index held steady.

British Troops Battle Gunmen in Belfast Unity Flats

More than 1,000 British soldiers sealed off Unity Flats in Belfast in an hours long clash with gunmen firing from churches and a cemetery. Police say at least one gunman was killed and two officers wounded as troops expanded the sweep to Londonderry and other Catholic areas amid renewed August violence.

Planners approve subdivision requests near Vandenberg Village

The County Planning Commission approved a tentative map for a 41 lot subdivision by Vandenberg Village Development Co and rezoning a 17.7 acre parcel west of the Vandenerg Village Golf Course. Opponent W N Harris urged delaying further urbanization until water quality improves.

Key water commission meeting on proposed rate hike

A city water commission meeting is set for 1 p.m. at City Hall to consider a three-man committee’s recommendation on raising the monthly water bill. Earlier staff proposed about 20 percent, but leaks from the committee suggest possible results from no hike to 10 or 15 percent.
