Annual J M chess tourney to start tomorrow night

Northern Santa Barbara County stars lead the fifth Johns Manville Title Chess Tournament opening Friday at 7 p.m. in the Veterans Memorial Building. Jay Spewart defends the title with rivals Lee Stanchfield Lynn Newcomb Ken Horne Vance Ray Rajan Ayyar and more. Six prizes awarded with entry fees 3 for adults 2 for juniors and 1 of the junior fee returned after all games.

Beilenson accuses Reagan aides of lying over Medi Cal screenings

Sen. Anthony Beilenson angrily charged Reagan administration officials with lying about a health screening program for 1.2 million Medi Cal children. State Health Director J M Stubblebine defended the effort, saying officials were doing their level best amid major problems during Wednesday hearings in Sacramento.

Solvang rezoning denied in county planning vote

The County Planning Commission rejected the proposed Environmental Development Co. plan for a 34 unit condominium on 19 acres north of Elsinore Drive and Chalk Hill Road, citing a single family area and concern over setting a precedent.
