UPI reports Republican Rep. Daniel Button of New York hires former Alabama Attorney General Richmond Flowers a Democrat convicted this year of extortion as his special assistant. Flowers appeals his eight year sentence and $10,000 fine in the 5th Circuit while Button plans pay of 12 000 to 14 000 starting June 2 for work on the House Small Business Committee. The Santa Barbara Historical Society will host the regional meeting of the Conference of California Historical Societies at the Miramar Hotel in Santa Barbara. At Wisconsin Motors Corp military engine plant in Milwaukee a masked gunman opened fire with shotguns wounding nine workers and a police officer before dying in a later gun battle. The shooter, James N. Flippin, 26, previously fired for insubordination amid claims of racial resentment. Police credited detectives and officers with returning fire. several workers remained hospitalized in critical condition.
