Santa Ynez Valley High School District trustees approved six percent raises for certificated personnel and six and a half percent for classified workers after two nights of talks with the Teachers Association and the California School Employees Association. Superintendent George B. Smith said the compromise reduced the certificated increase from 14 percent and included extra pay for additional duties. The board also granted six percent to Principal Manuel J. Silva and six and a half percent to summer recreation staff, plus a 25 cent hourly wage bump for summer workers as negotiations concluded and a preliminary budget was set for next year.

County mulls shifting Avenue cleanup to local district
The Avenue of the Flags, called the Buellton Strip, is a county green belt slated for possible transfer to the Buellton Community Services District as it offers no county recreation value. Solvang Park and a tiny county park may also be eyed for district takeovers. County parks boss Floyd Campbell notes weekend cleanup strain with a small two-person crew, leaving Hans Christian Andersen Regional Park, Solvang Park, Santa Ynez Park, Buellton Strip, and Nojoqui Falls Park under limited staff.

Board to consider new ambulance pact with Santa Barbara Co
Board of Supervisors will meet June 1 to review a 12 month ambulance pact starting July 1 with Santa Barbara Ambulance Co. The revision eliminates county subsidies and expands the South Coast response area to the Ventura line. Santa Ynez Valley service faces discontinuation unless subsidies rise. Three options include rerouting to Santa Barbara ambulances, creating a new Valley service area with bids from Community Ambulance Service Lompoc and others, or purchasing a county ambulance for fire dept use. An annual CPR course is underway at Santa Ynez Valley Hospital with staff participation.
