Welfare fraud probes rapped by Grand Jury

The County Grand Jury filed an interim report with the Superior Court and Board of Supervisors faulting Welfare Department for lax oversight of fraud investigations. It cites hundreds of backlogged cases and about $150,000 dropped from active caseloads, with 368 cases still active and more than $500,000 owed under restitution agreements. The panel urges staffing, overtime, and training reforms and notes unrealistic probation repayment schedules.

Memorial Day observances mark three day weekend

Clear skies bring warm Memorial Day weekend as public services and private observances unfold in Lompoc. Malpractice insurance plan narrowly approved

The California Assembly narrowly approved a diluted version of Gov Brown's plan to curb soaring medical malpractice insurance costs for doctors. Senate unit okays budget in California clash over farm labor board

The Senate Finance Committee endorsed a $12.88 billion state budget for the fiscal year starting July 1. It keeps unresolved the Agricultural Labor Relations Board issue and funds it at $6.9 million, while approving $272 million above Brown’s request and adding $52.3 million for cost of living increases for aged, blind and disabled recipients. The plan faces a full Senate vote and a conference committee draft.

Historic nuclear pact signed by Ford and Brezhnev

President Ford and Soviet leader Brezhnev signed a five year treaty to regulate underground peaceful nuclear explosions. It allows observation of blasts over 100 kilotons and sets limits on sizes while linking to broader arms control moves. Wicks resigns as Lompoc hospital administrator

Ken Wicks submitted his resignation as Lompoc District Hospital administrator effective July 31 due to illness. He recommended his assistant Jane Flaherty as successor and Martha Hicks and Angie Guerra for key roles. The board will seek a new administrator and appoint Dr. Heiges as medical director of the Convalescent Care Center starting July 1. A special meeting to set the 1976 77 budget is scheduled for June 2.
