Parks and Recreation Budget Meeting Seeks Restored Items

The Parks and Recreation Commission and City Council will meet tomorrow at 3 p.m. to discuss the 1970 preliminary budget and seek restoration of items previously deleted. Proposed add ons include Thompson Park sidewalks about 5000 dollars and ongoing Ryan Park development drawings with uncertain costs.

Nine Hurt When Plane Encounters Clear Air Turbulence

United Air Lines flight 74 from Las Vegas to New York encountered a clear air disturbance over a thunderstorm region, injuring at least nine people who were taken to hospitals. The DC8 dropped from 35 000 feet as plates and cups flew during the incident.

Pentagon asks Lockheed to consider merger to avert crisis

Deputy Defense Secretary David Packard told the Senate Lockheed faces bankruptcy risk absent private sector help. He urged a merger or bank financing to preserve Lockheed’s capability as it runs cost overruns on the C5A cargo plane nearing $2 billion.

City forms two subcommittees for Industrial Committee

At a recent meeting Sol Lefkowitz named Ralph Patey chairman of the evaluation and finance committee. Members include George Cotsenmeyer Bob Lewis and Francis Underwood. A second program and development committee with Robert Kranig as chairman includes Bill Fick Harley Craig and Oscar Johnson to guide policy contracts and zoning improvements for industrial development.

Assembly panel rejects bill letting police tap phones

Sacramento UPS reports an Assembly Criminal Procedure Committee failed to approve Governor Reagan’s measure to authorize local district attorneys and the state attorney general to tap telephones with court orders to fight organized crime. Opponents warned of potential abuses and erosion of civil liberties.

Two charged with burglary in Safeway theft case

Gary Wayne Munn and David Wayne Paul faced burglary charges after allegedly stealing groceries from Safeway Market in Lompoc. Bail set at 3125 dollars. Paul out on bail, Munn released on own recognizance. Police recovered 83 dollars in groceries from a suspect vehicle. Market officials had tracked losses totaling 7000 dollars over 12 weeks. The market is in Lompoc Shopping Center.

Icebreakers collide in Baffin Bay

Humble Oil reports its icebreaker Manhattan collided with the Canadian ship Louis S. St. Laurent in heavy ice off Baffin Bay during gusty winds. Both vessels were stuck 50 feet apart. no injuries reported. The St. Laurent sustained a dent along 40 feet of its side.
