SST headed for new criticism from Senate

The SST faces renewed scrutiny in the Senate as supporters push for a Nixon plan to allocate 290 million dollars in fiscal 1971 for two prototypes. Opponents call the project a flying dodo and boondoggle while backers argue political momentum from states with SST contractors will drive approval. The House already approved the 7 billion DOT appropriation with SST funding in addition to 708 million already set, though 557.6 million has been spent. The SST aims for a 1978 test flight with 300 passengers and speed around 1,800 mph, contrasted with Soviet TU144 and Anglo French Concorde flying but not yet in commercial production.
