Paperboy trades route for Air Force cadet dream

Mike Berry, a Lompoc Record carrier for 5 years, leaves 57 customers behind in May to join the U S Air Force Academy. Congressman Teague appointed him at 11 and a half in 1966. now 18, he balances school, route duties, and district manager expectations while trading tips and town familiarity for cadet life and summer boot camp.

LSHS Photographers Earn Top Honors in SPAP

Lompoc Senior High School marks a tremendous year for its photography department teacher Jay Ratcliff notes one student earned a six week European study tour and seven students won twelve honor awards plus four color and black and white distinctions. The school is named one of two top high schools in the SPAP nationwide contest with over 60 000 students from 1500 plus high schools competing. Debra Clarey William Heiden Deni Obermire Emily Payne Robert Ramming Larry Robertson Renee Tichy are among the LSHS winners with multiple honors and a study travel scholarship.

Mental discipline fuels Leffew's rise in bull riding

Santa Maria rider Gary Leffew credits positive thinking and 21 day meditation with tripling his earnings in 1967 and helping him win the 1970 national bull riding championship and finals. He describes visualizing success before climbs, shares plans for a 21 day mountain retreat, and notes a recent broken leg from Short T in Oklahoma City. He operates a bull riding school in Arroyo Grande with his wife and young son and will judge the Elks Rodeo at the Santa Maria Fairgrounds June 1-3.
