Memorial Day weekend roads marred by minor injuries
Near the end of the three day Memorial Day weekend three people were injured when a car struck a curb in Lompoc overturning. A separate helicopter plane crash near Santa Maria left the pilot slightly injured. No fatalities were reported in Santa Barbara County by 9 am though counties across California logged additional deaths. Nationwide fatalities were expected to rise with an estimated 550 to 650 auto deaths and 26 000 to 30 000 injuries during the 78 hour period. A Santa Ynez Solvang Buellton area sequence included two accidents with injuries and a pedestrian hit and run near Buellton. Weather was sunny and warm in Central California coastal areas keeping conditions generally good for travelers.

Skylab Crew Begins Medical Tests Aboard Space Station
Three astronauts Charles Conrad Joseph Kerwin and Paul Weitz started a 28 day stay aboard Skylab with blood sampling and circulatory tests. They cooked breakfast in the wardroom and planned private bedrooms as flight controllers hailed the mission in good shape.

Nightmare weather lashes nation with deadly storms
Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes swept the south and central United States over Memorial Day weekend. Alabama reported six deaths in Centreville Center Point and Greensboro with hundreds injured. Jonesboro Arkansas saw three dead and over 200 injured. Mississippi and other areas faced fatalities and widespread damage as storms disrupted travel and nightly commemorations.

No Gas Shortage Draws Calm Memorial Weekend Traffic

Five drownings mark Memorial Day weekend on Kern River
Five people died in separate incidents along Kern River and nearby areas over Memorial Day weekend. At Lake Isabella and Miracle Hot Springs in Kern County two men, Jose Montez and Louis Castenada, vanished after slipping from hazards while trying to reach shore. A third man, Lee Green, and friend Emmett Rayborn, also disappeared after Rayborn failed to reach a rock during swimming near Democrat Hot Springs. In Tulare County, Dan Miller disappeared after an air mattress capsized on a Kern River run near Johnsondale, while his companion Chriss Sessa swam to shore. In Arizona, two parachutists, Lincoln Shirk and Richard Montgomery, died when they pulled ripcords too late during a desert free fall. The jumpmaster said the two seconds late pulls caused the fatal impact. the other two parachutists survived.
