Conrad Kerwin and Weitz launch at 9 a.m. EDT aboard an modified Apollo command ship and reach orbit 10 minutes later. The crew prepares for a 4 37 p m rendezvous with Skylab while carrying sunshades and tools to clear debris and fix a jammed wing panel.
William T. Farr, jailed for 46 days for refusing to reveal sources, addressed about 70 diners at Lompoc Valley Press Club. He framed the Sixth and First Amendments as opposing forces in the Manson murder trial, defending the shield law under ex post facto concerns and highlighting Watergate as a key example.
The California Assembly passes a $9.4 billion state budget, the nation’s largest, funded with a $1 billion projected tax surplus for 1973-74. It includes large civil service pay raises, the biggest school aid increase to date, and funds for a new Capitol and governor’s mansion, exceeding Reagan’s request by $137 million.
Sen. Herman Talmadge urged the Senate Watergate Committee to bring big-name witnesses, including Jeb Magruder and former top aides, to testify soon to resolve questions about President Nixon. Magruder plans to testify without immunity and may implicate other ex-officials.

Robert Chilson resigns. Harold Thompson named secretary. Room charges rise to 58 dollars for semi private acute care. Dr Jean Michels named chief of staff succeeding Dr Rodney Hamer. Long term care remains 18 dollars and extended care 40 dollars daily.
Government offices banks and financial institutions close Monday for Memorial Day. Food markets mostly open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Williams Bros East and Village Safeway closed all day. Jordano's in Lompoc center closes midnight Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday then opens. Braun's Pharmacy 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rexall 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thrifty 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Record prints Monday but offices closed all day.
Former racer-operator John Alessio testified at his son Dominic's trial that he was taken from Lompoc prison for visits in 1971, including motel meetings with a visitor and his wife. Prosecutors cited alleged gratuities tied to favorable treatment while Dominic denied attempting to sway a prison official. Actress Maria della Malva testified to motel meetings with Alessio in the Lompoc area.
The Lompoc Water Commission reaffirmed coordinating two key water transmission mains with street work. It approved Cypress Avenue and J Street mains, with Cypress possibly starting in 1973-74 and under way by year end. A long term capital plan and a study to replace deficient lines follow the network analysis. The panel also urged delaying deep test well studies until surveys by the County Water Agency on basin status are completed.
