Sixers Sign Ray Lewis For Three Year Deal

The Philadelphia 76ers signed guard Ray Lewis, 6 foot 2, a sophomore standout at Los Angeles State who was the nation’s third leading scorer last season. General Manager Don Dejardin announced the three year contract on Thursday.

Mets beat Dodgers in 19th inning marathon

The New York Mets edged Los Angeles 7-3 in 19 innings after an 8:03 p.m. start that ended at 1:45 a.m. Bud Harrelson played all nine innings at short, and Cleon Jones delivered the key hit in the 19th. Willie Davis tied NL single game hits record with six for the Dodgers. Rusty Staub collected five Mets hits, including a decisive double. Manny Mota went 0-for-9 as his batting average dropped to .320.

Probe charges spark San Diego Chargers pill investigation

The State Board of Medical Examiners and the district attorney’s office in San Diego opened a probe into claims that the Chargers obtained thousands of pills without prescriptions. Depositions will be taken. the action stems from a lawsuit by ex-Charger Houston Ridge alleging pills given during the 1971 season affected his readiness to play.

US hoop team to tour China on three week trip

A 12 player collegiate basketball squad with two from Kentucky and two from Memphis State will tour the Republic of China for three weeks. Led by Kevin Grevey Jim Andrews Ronnie Robinson and Larry Finch the team arrives in Hong Kong June 14 and begins play June 16 near the Chinese border. Gene Bartow coaches with Bob Hopkins assisting.

Cabrillo honors aquatic stars at awards banquet

Cabrillo High named Jeff Heidmous water polo MVP and Nagle Award recipient for scholarship while Gary Anderson earned swim MVP. Heidmous, a three year polo starter and two time first teamer, also starred for Hill. Mike Rich won Most Improved Athlete as Hill's junior placed third in the 400 freestyle and joined all league second team.
