Man shot during Chattanooga riot as 1500 National Guardsmen patrol

National Guardsmen enforced a curfew in Chattanooga after a fourth night of violence. A man in his mid 20s was found shot in Alton Park as sniping and firebombings continued. 36 arrests were made for curfew violations and two for other charges.

Chattanooga Riot Sparks Trooper Deployment After Show Cancelled

Walker said the violence lacked an organized basis and stemmed from black gangs described as marauders. The unrest began Friday night at a cancelled soul show at Municipal Auditorium and spread to the streets. Armour, with riot experience from Memphis after Dr. King’s assassination, offered to meet anyone with a problem to end the disorder. He warned Chattanooga faced peril Sunday night until troopers and soldiers arrived as Chief Gene Roberts noted shotgun rounds shifted from skeet to buckshot.

Reagan confronts welfare critics at Sacramento town hall

Gov. Ronald Reagan ends a welfare reform town hall with a shouting match after critics present him with a mock award claiming he is the highest paid welfare recipient. The event drew 400 in a 5,000 seat venue as supporters urged action on his overhaul plan.

Do Not Pay Unverified Insurance Bills Warned by LA BBB

The Los Angeles Better Business Bureau cautions residents not to remit payment for insurance bills from firms for policies they do not hold. A Dallas firm has mailed $5 bills to Californians, threatening cancellation of nonexisting policies.
