Rodney Dean Curl, a 31 year old Wintu Indian, edged Jack Nicklaus by one stroke to win the Colonial National Tournament at Colonial Country Club, taking $50,000 and moving into fourth in 1974 money winnings. Nicklaus earned $28,500 for second, Chuck Courtney $17,750 for third, and Julius Boros $11,750 for fourth. Curl dreamed of defeating Nicklaus and also aimed for Masters qualification and a $100,000 season earn, both achieved. He noted plans to support his mother and Indian causes with the prize money.

Terry Williams, a 1973 Lompoc High graduate and 2 mile state champ, placed second in the 6 mile with 28 40.2 at the Pacific-8 Championships at the LA Coliseum. He also finished third in the 3 mile with 13 30 Friday as Oregon placed third with 94 points. UCLA won with 1341 and USC led UCLA. UCLA freshman Alvin Gilmore ran seventh in the mile in 4 07.1.
