Cubs Scout rummage sale at Culligan Plant

Cub Scout pack 103 led by Cubmaster Luke Gies schedules a rummage sale this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Culligan Plant located on Apple Avenue. Sheriff’s Search & Rescue tested a new electric winch in a practice run, lifting a simulated casualty. The drill included Deputy Bud Olson and Capt. Bill Bryan among others. A Lompoc City Council dinner meeting with Van Denberg AFB commanders is planned, featuring Maj. Gen. Gerald Johnson. Maj. Gen. Kronauer may be unable to attend. First Lt. Larry I Broadhead of Orem Utah listed as a casualty in Vietnam. he served with the 4258th Strategic Wing at U Tapao Thailand, alongside his father Lt. Col. Leo Broadhead, both pilots in B 52s and KC 135s. Lt. Broadhead, a Clover Park High School graduate, was commissioned in 1966 via AF ROTC at the University of Utah.

SP official to explain crossing safety at Lompoc hearing

A top Southern Pacific Railroad official R G Thurston assistant division supervisor will speak at a public hearing in Lompoc City Hall tomorrow night at 7 30 p m He will discuss the alleged safety threat at the North A Street crossing joining Lompoc Valley Safety Council members private citizens and city officials including W W A Phillips and Doug Soper The hearing follows complaints from April 29 1968 when a motorist narrowly escaped injury and a February 12 accident this year and includes investigation by police fire and railroad officials and a March 11 visit by the California Public Utilities Commission

County planners weigh Hollister Ranch development plan

The County Planning Commission resumes a public hearing on amending the general plan to allow mass development of Hollister Ranch land west of Gaviota by Macco Corp. The session also continues William Neukom's request for a recreational ice rink at 4060 Via Real Carpinteria Valley with a redesign to add parking and improve traffic flow.

Trail Plan Comments Invited For County General Plan Update

County Planning Director Herbert H. Diverbiss invites comments on June 4 as the Planning Commission holds a public hearing in Santa Barbara on adding an equestrian and hiking element to the county general plan. Maps show proposed trails across Goleta Valley Lompoc Valley Santa Maria Orcutt and Santa Ynez Valley with emended plans for Montecito Carpinteria area. Copies will be on view at Carpinteria Montecito Goleta Santa Ynez Valley Lompoc Santa Maria Orcutt and Santa Maria libraries and offices.

A Russian scientist said in Moscow that Adam and Maria Ahmedova, wed in 1867, hold the world record for the longest marriage. The couple's ages were not reported and no current dates were given.

Absentee Ballot Deadline for Fire Bond Vote Noted

Voters for the June 3 fire department improvement bond election must file a written absentee ballot application with the city clerk by May 27. Those away on election day for reasons arising after May 27 can obtain an absentee ballot and an affidavit form from the city clerk to vote in person at City Hall or another designated location.

Alfred Greiff 1882 87 dies in Santa Barbara area

Graveside services for Alfred Greiff age 87 will be held at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery at 2 p.m. Thursday. He died yesterday at a Santa Barbara convalescent home. Survivors include his widow Alice, a stepson James Koke baker, and two grandchildren. Donations urged to local cancer association or church building fund. Welch-Ryce Associates Mortuary of Santa Barbara in charge.
