Nixon daughter Tricia to marry Edward Cox June 12

President Nixon and Mrs. Nixon mailed 400 wedding invitations for the marriage of their daughter Patricia to Edward Finch Cox on Saturday June 12 at four o'clock in the afternoon at the White House. Invitations feature light brown paper with gold Presidential seal and hand-cut script. Cox's friends plan a stag party and Tricia will host a prenuptial luncheon with bridal attendants.

Washington UPI report notes that 1971 model cars suffer average crash damages of 1113.89 after barrier impacts at 15 mph, about 48 percent higher than 1970 models. Spring dance concert at Hancock College

Horticultural Field Day Set Across Santa Barbara Area

Five Santa Barbara County high schools and two Ventura County schools join the fifth annual Horticultural Field Day at Rancho Dos Pueblos. More than 150 students compete in seeds bulbs plants weeds and tools judging. Prizes include trophies and certificates. A luncheon follows the tour.

Supervisors Back Drug Treatment Grant Plan

The Board approved a $136,091 grant application to fund a methadone program for 200 heroin addicts at Santa Maria and Santa Barbara County hospital clinics for fiscal year 1971 72 starting July 1. If CCCJ approves in June no county funds are needed next year. otherwise county commitments will sustain 50 patients in each county area.

House committee backs Social Security and welfare reforms

The House Ways and Means Committee approved a 9 billion package of Social Security and welfare reforms after rejecting an across the board increase for 26 million beneficiaries. It backed 3.3 billion for targeted benefits and voted to raise payroll taxes from 5.2 to 5.4 percent. The plan’s welfare provisions drew the most controversy.

New USPS Postage Rates Take Effect May 16

Lompoc postmaster Perry Martin announced temporary postage increases that will start May 16 as the USPS shifts toward self sufficiency. First class letters rise from 6 to 8 cents per ounce, airmail from 10 to 11 cents, cards from 5 to 6 cents, and airmail cards from 8 to 9 cents. Second and third class rates will also rise on May 16 but will be phased over time. Short-term changes apply while the Postal Rate Commission decides permanent adjustments. Domestic Canada and Mexico letter rates will align.
