Chess Tournament Advances in Johns-Manville Title

A field of 19 players competes in the third Johns-Manville Title Chess Tournament at the Housing Authority Building 217 W Maple Ave. Rick Cowdry defends his title as eight players won their first round games. Final rounds conclude tomorrow with Ross Perry and Jay Spowart adjourned and Tom Stuermer off to a bye.

Obituaries for Edna Houk and Abe Watkins in Lompoc

Edna Ethel Houk 76 died in a Santa Maria rest home. Funeral Monday at 2 p.m. at McPeek Family Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Robert E. Montgomery officiating. She was born in Riceville Tennessee and lived in Lompoc 58 years, survived by son Edward Houk, sister Mary Singleton, Ventura, and four grandchildren. Abe F. Watkins 69 died at Santa Barbara General Hospital. Lived in Lompoc 45 years at 211 North C Street. Retired from J-M in 1967 after 36 years at the Lompoc plant. funeral arrangements pending at McPeek Family Mortuary. Further information to follow in the Record.

Correction clarifies Benz lineage and honors regional award win

The Daily Record corrects Charles Benz’s parentage to Mr and Mrs George Benz of 1112 East Peach and notes his victory in the area business majors division of the Bank of America California Community College Award.
