Lompoc teachers seek major salary overhaul in proposed contract

The Lompoc Education Association pushes a comprehensive agreement demanding an $888,480 costly salary schedule overhaul for 612 teachers. Proposals include starting salaries of 7875 to 8925, a top rate of 15645, 176 teaching days, and an average salary rising from 10593 to 12026. The package also raises administrative pay, extra duty pay, fringe benefits, substitute rates, and payroll rights. A separate Santa Barbara area gunmen investigation reports shootings, bank window damage, none injured, with an APB for a black and yellow late model car.

US Bombers Knock Out Vietnamese Anti Aircraft Posts

Two U S Air Force Phantom bombers destroyed three anti aircraft gun emplacements in North Vietnam during a protective reaction strike over Laos. The mission followed by 33rd such attack this year and 40th since raids began on May 2 1970.

GM says no clean exhaust path for 1976 models found

At EPA hearings General Motors Ford American Motors and Volkswagen warned they cannot meet the 1976 nitrogen oxide reduction standard. GM said 1975 models may meet 90 percent hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide cuts but Nitrogen oxides are not controllable to required levels. GM cited 119 million spent in 1970 on exhaust cleanup research.

Rogers meets Israeli leaders to press for peace concessions

Secretary of State William P. Rogers meets with Prime Minister Golda Meir and cabinet aides in Tel Aviv after touring Sharm el Sheikh and Jerusalem. He aims to push Israel toward a softer peace stance and resolves to gain a clearer view of the Middle East conflict. Rogers, late to the talks, is joined by Israeli intel and military leaders.

Lompoc to host police week open house and tours

Lompoc Police Department will hold a week long open house with guided tours at 1 30 3 30 and 7 p m on most days plus 1 30 and 3 30 p m Wednesday and Saturday. Displayed will be weapons equipment and communications systems with participation from the Sheriff s Department California Highway Patrol and Air Security Police.

State unemployment climbs to 7.4 percent in April

California's unemployment rate rose to 7.4 percent in April up three tenths from March. The Department of Human Resources cited economy slack and aerospace layoffs. Unemployed persons fell to 995,000 while those employed increased to 7.99 million across the state. Local rates varied with Los Angeles at 7.7 and Orange County at 8.0 percent.
