Twenty nine trained Census Bureau enumerators begin duty in Lompoc Valley and surrounding regions Wednesday morning. They will cover every housing unit within a bordered area including Vandenberg AFB Los Alamos Buellton Gaviota State Park and the Pacific coastline. If households completed the short form the census taker will proceed. The strike at Vandenberg AFB by United Auto Workers against Martin Marietta continues with no contract talks after six days. Over 100 aerospace technicians and supply workers joined pickets at base entrances while supervisory staff fill in. Both sides express willingness to meet though no meetings are scheduled yet. Wahlers Details AB 908 Tax Hit on Lompoc Schools
Lompoc City Administrator Gene Wahlers says AB 908 would shift tax burdens to Lompoc taxpayers for districtwide education funding. He cites a city survey showing 15,502 students in Lompoc Unified School District, with 7,208 living inside the city, while state collections would fund the entire district. Wahlers notes the proposal would raise about 67,000 dollars annually and force a minimum 21 cent rise in the property tax rate per 100 assessed value.
