Hearst expects word after new plan on Patricia Hearst kidnapping

Randolph Hearst says he will fear Patricia Hearst is dead if no word from SLA by the time the planned $4 million food handout is set. He reports belief she is unharmed and notes SLA letter to KPFA from imprisoned members as negotiations continue. The Hearst Corp will place the additional ransom in escrow pending Patricia's release.

U S and Thailand Agree to Major Troop Reductions

The United States and Thailand reach a principle agreement to cut American forces by about one third starting mid May. Around 10 000 personnel and strategic and tactical aircraft will depart, leaving about 27 000 troops by year end and roughly one third of the 50 B52s in country removed.

Tornadoes and hail hit Alabama and Louisiana in severe weather

Tornadoes roiled through Louisiana and Alabama with baseball sized hail and a tornado watch in effect for a 45 mile wide line from Tuscaloosa to east of Anniston. A tornado near Ruston injured three. another near Tuscaloosa was seen early today.

Moretti vows to decriminalize homosexual acts

Assembly Speaker Robert Moretti pledged to decriminalize consensual homosexual acts in every state statute. At a Toklas Club event he said he would ensure no laws prevent consenting adults from acting freely. Willis Brown introduced him, calling Moretti a gay liberator. club members include many gays.

Reds Move Artillery Closer To Saigon In Easter Offensive

Communist forces advanced artillery within closer range to Saigon than at any time since 1969 and unleashed antitank and antiaircraft missiles during a heavy third day of attacks near the capital. A 105mm battery bombarded the Trung Lao infantry camp 25 miles northwest of Saigon as mortars and wire guided missiles joined a 216 round barrage. The fighting marked the second anniversary of the 1972 Easter offensive.

Additional amendments predicted to election reform legislation

The stalled electoral reform bill gaining federal funding for campaigns faces new amendments as the Senate advances it. Proponents seek 15 cents per eligible voter with private donations up to $3,000 per donor, while four amendments were approved to permit larger donor limits and curb fraud.
