Orchid show set to open Friday at Earl Warren grounds
The 28th Santa Barbara International Orchid Show opens Friday night at Earl Warren Showgrounds Exhibit Hall. The three day event features world class cymbidium displays, exotic blooms, a jungle island, orchid center, information booths and trophies. Judge panels will announce division winners on opening night as wine tasting benefits Arthritic Foundation. Local officials including Francis Beattie and Gerald Firestone are invited. Commercial growers from Carpinteria, Montecito, Santa Barbara and Goleta vie for prizes. A corsage booth and orchid care demonstrations are planned for attendees.

Ancient campsite unearthed at Vandenberg reveals prehistory
Lompoc archaeologist Lawrence Spanne and Allan Hancock College students reveal a 8 to 10 foot buried site on a steep Vandenberg stream bank with a clay floor, charcoal hearths, stone tools, bones, and elk remains suggesting early Canadian Elk predating Tule Elk evolution. Dating via carbon methods could provide an absolute chronology for early Chumash and regional human activity.
