California deer hunters raise buck kill rate in 1972

California officials report 106 of every 1000 deer hunters killed a buck in 1972 up from 100 in 1971, while total licensed hunters and deer killed fell. Deer tags sold reached 353,300 with 37,487 returns. 38,907 bucks were killed in 1971 by about 395,500 hunters.

Tough 80 Year Old Fends Off Mugger in Los Angeles

An 80-year-old man, Sam Prochoren, fought off a mugger in Los Angeles Tuesday after the thief grabbed his pocket. Prochoren broke the attacker’s knee with his cane and stabbed him in the legs with splinters, sending the suspect fleeing before police arrested Harrison John Caniness, 45, nearby on robbery suspicions.

Local AAU mat club nets top finishes at Hawthorne meet

Four Valley grapplers from the Lompoc-Vandenberg AAU club finished in the top three at the Hawthorne Southern Section Freestyle Championships. Benjo Williams won at 106 pounds with five pins and a 19 0 finish, Andy Huyck claimed the 165 pound class, Bruce Probst took second at 175, and Roy Patterson earned third in heavyweight. A bill creating a four year experimental program to boost commercial silver salmon fishing in California cleared its first hurdle. AB358 by Assemblyman Barry Keene was approved 5 to 0 by the Senate Natural Resources and Wildlife Committee and sent to the Finance Committee.
