County departments seek 66.7 million in general funds for 1973-74, with a total budget request of 73.22 million including roads and capital outlay. The package adds 187 new positions, may be trimmed by Raymond Johnson’s administrative office, and notes welfare reform downsizing as HR Bill 1 reduces categorical aids.
Funeral services are pending at McPeek Family Mortuary for Edward D. Hardeman 69 who died last night at Lompoc District Hospital. Lurene Mead Beattie 74 died Monday in Santa Maria with services Thursday at Starbuck Mortuary Chapel and burial at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. Joseph Junio Bosio 60 died Saturday at home on Highway 246 R F D Union Sugar Road with Mass at La Purisima Church and interment in Cemetery. Friends asked to remember Heart Fund.

The Vandenberg AFB AIAA section will hold a joint meeting with San Francisco and Santa Barbara sections on March 24. Guests tour Vandenberg AFB in the early afternoon, followed by a 5 45 p.m. cocktails event at the Santa Maria Club and a 7 p.m. Santa Maria Barbecue dinner. Col. Howard S. Davis, STS planning director from SAMSO, will speak on the STS from a DOD viewpoint and Vandenberg's role in the program.
La Mesa Elementary School PTA will sponsor a candidates forum for the school district board of trustees on Thursday at 7 30 p m. Rev Kenneth Body will moderate with all 10 candidates in attendance. After three questions per candidate the audience may ask. Public invited. PTA meets beforehand to elect 1973 officers.
Candidates discuss nutrition, Brown Act compliance, and open meetings with mixed views on executive sessions. Incumbent DeWayne Holmdahl defends four years on the board and new contract wording requiring psychiatric tests for teachers. Other candidates praise or critique the personnel unit concept and stresses on transparency, class sizes, and public input.
The Beautification Commission began plans to plant street trees on Ocean Avenue between A and Seventh Streets in memory of late Commissioner Dick Osmundson. Trees will be chosen from the city nursery and funded by individual commissioners. The panel also thanked PLUS for weekend weeding at the Wye city entrance. An architectural review of the new Lompoc Record building at 115 North H Street was accepted, calling for sprinklers in exterior planters.
