Local wrestler Merk Hall Dominates Weight Classes for Titles

Merk Hall won five of six bouts to claim titles while competing against 27 to 150 wrestlers per weight class. Benjo Williams finished second at 135 pounds with four wins and one loss. Mitch Moore, a state tourney third, won a youth title. Darlene Jones ran the 100 and 220 in 5:32 wind. The local club to compete in the Las Vegas Invitational on June 6.

Masters track wins 30-and-over relay at Del Mar Relays

Lompoc's 30-and-over distance medley relay team won at the Del Mar Master Relays held at Ca Poly in San Luis Obispo. Members Dave Mak Stan Cohen Ray Gil and Tom Sturak posted 56.0 2 17.5 3 54.6 and 4 54.5 as Gil aged 49 placed third in the 30-and-over mile with a 5 07.

Bickmore and Hurley Lead Lompoc Tennis Club Tourney

Bickmore wins A division by beating Steve Mummy 6 2 6 2 while Ed Hurley takes B division with 6 2 4 6 6 2 over Ron Johnson. The event drew 26 entrants with close semifinal and quarterfinal battles.

The Lompoc Vandenberg Wrestling Club sent 20 competitors to a Mt. Sac freestyle tournament on Saturday and produced two open division champions, led by Gary Eppley who pinned six of seven opponents in the 115 pound class.

Marlin swimmers win seconds and ribbons at Santa Ynez meet

Lompoc Marlins, led by Richard Hains and Tom Fisher, earned multiple podiums at the Santa Ynez Pentathlon. Hains placed first in two events and second in two more in the 9-10 division while Fisher collected two seconds and two thirds plus a fourth in the 13-14 group, helping the team rack 24 ribbons and 72 points from 16 swimmers.

Lompoc runners compete at San Jose Invitational meet

A trio from the Lompoc Valley Track Club competed at the San Jose Invitational. Kerri Marshall, 14, ran a personal best 26.8 to win her 220 heat but did not reach the finals and placed fifth in the 380 with a 2:34. Cindy Tykeson took second in the 14 and over mile.

Cabrillo, Northern League champions, opened defense of their crown at Village Country Club beating San Luis Obispo 31-5. Bob Berends Jim Gray Mark DeDera and Curt Wilde each blanked their opponent 6-0 with Wilde as medalist at 74. The coach cautioned about the upcoming home match with Righetti Warriors. Cabrillo JV won a 9 hole match as darkness shortened play with John Kunkel shooting 44.

Braves Righthander Injured But Imperious In No-Hitter Bid

Braves pitcher Rick Fridrich sailed six innings with three walks and six strikeouts before a wild pitch hit his pitching arm and sent him to the hospital for precaution. Rodiguez relieved and preserved the no hitter in the seventh. Lompoc erupted for four runs in the third, with Fridrich driving in a run on a double and Renfroe Samaniego each picking up two hits.

SBCC tops Hancock in two baseball games to open doubleheader

Santa Barbara City College defeated Hancock 6-5 in 10 innings then won the nightcap 7-2. Dennis Hall took the loss in game one after six innings. Curt Jenkins allowed all five SBCC runs in two-thirds of an inning. Hancock left 15 on base and had four hits in game one and four hits in game two.
