Egypt welcomes Rogers call for Israel to return to 1967 borders

Cairo sources welcomed Secretary Rogers push for Israel to retreat to pre war lines while opposing any Sinai demilitarization in a peace settlement. Meir in Knesset rejected returning to those borders and ruled out withdrawal from Sharm el Sheikh Golan Heights East Jerusalem and Jordan River.

Thomas Dewey Dies at 69 in Miami Beach

Former New York governor and three time GOP aspirant Thomas E. Dewey died of a heart attack in Miami Beach. He was to attend a White House dinner and a St Patrick's Day event before death. Nixon observed a moment of silence at the dinner. Dewey would have turned 70 on March 24.

Lompoc Council Delays Under Public Hearing on Utility Rate Hikes

Lompoc City Council debated a proposed refuse collection rate increase from 1.50 to 3.30 dollars and an electric rate rise from 8.12 to 9.02. They continued the item for further study, delaying the June 1 start and planning a public hearing. Councilmembers sought reduced refuse rates and public input before voting.

No SS increase for welfare group

The Social Security bill authorizes a 10 percent raise for 26 million Americans and awaits Nixon’s signature. A provision could cut welfare payments for about 1.9 million poor people, offsetting gains with possible $1 loss for every $1 of new benefits.
