Bank of America cuts rates and mortgag e in San Francisco

The Bank of America lowered its prime rate to 5 1 4 percent matching Chase Manhattan. Mortgage rate drops to 6 3 4 percent while savings rate falls to 4 percent. President A W Clausen notes a 31 4 percent drop since March. California banks follow Chase Manhattan with similar reductions.

SALT talks open with hard bargaining in Vienna

The United States and the Soviet Union began the fourth SALT round with formalities dropped and tough bargaining at the Soviet embassy. U.S. leader Gerard C. Smith and Soviet chief Vladimir S. Semenov led the discussions as both sides held firm on ABM limits and broader missile restraints. Officials expect the Vienna round to be among the toughest since 1969, with no initiative until after the Moscow party congress.

Winds and tornadoes lash Great Lakes region causing damage

Up to 70 mph winds and a tornado ripped roofs from plants in Waynesboro Georgia and Edinburg Indiana. Flooding hit parts of Wisconsin and Iowa counties while northern Michigan and Gary area reported snow, ice, and multiple vehicle accidents on frozen highways.

Zodiac killer taunts Southern California in new letter

A new Zodiac letter postmarked Pleasanton claims responsibility for more Riverside and Southern California killings. The Times reports the handwriting matches the San Francisco letters, tying the Riverside 1968 Cheri Bates slaying to the Zodiac and noting police links to five killings so far.

Social Security hike appears certain for millions

UPI reports Conferees from the House and Senate back a 10 percent Social Security increase retroactive to January 1, with no payroll tax rise this year. Beneficiaries would see June 3 first checks and a later retroactive payment, raising the average retiree from 118 to 130 dollars and couples from 198 to 218. Payroll taxes stay at 5.2 percent.
