Sheriff pledges full compliance with 25 percent cut study

Sheriff John W. Carpenter told the Board of Supervisors he will comply with the directive for all department heads to study and report on the effects of a 25 percent budget cut. He defended his earlier remark about economizing by getting rid of “drunks and incompetents and bureaucrats” as directed at county employees, not the supervisors. He noted such studies come from administrative offices and federal state government and stressed that a 25 percent cut is impractical for the Sheriff’s Department while remaining open to public scrutiny of the results.
