El Camino School marks 100 years with student play and ceremony

Students at El Camino School celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of their founding dating to 1876 with a history inspired play written by Roger Ashley Kristi Hess and Scott Duden. The production reflects pioneer struggles epidemics earthquakes and fires that shaped the school long ago.

Ford unveils farm policy reorg and estate tax hike

President Ford announced a reorganization of federal agricultural policy making and proposed raising the estate tax exemption from 60 000 to 150 000 to ease the burden on family farm owners. He spoke in Illinois during a campaign stop ahead of the March 16 primary against Ronald Reagan.

Jobless rate falls to 7.6 percent in February

The Labor Department reports February unemployment at 7.6 percent, down from 7.8 in January and 1.6 points below the recession peak. Nonagricultural payrolls rise 210,000 while total employment returns to pre-recession levels, with gains concentrated in women and traditional breadwinners.

FBI expert testifies on Patty Hearst notes in trial

In San Francisco FBI cryptoanalyst Ronald Furgerson testified that a set of letters found in Patricia Hearst purse and in SLA members’ belongings were coded telephone numbers. He said three cards depicted 15 numbers, mostly San Francisco pay phones near the SLA hideout, with defense objections about relevance and time. The trial continued into its sixth week with ongoing evidence battles and Hearst notes from a terrorism class presented by prosecutors.

Exxon to Build Offshore Refinery in Santa Barbara Channel

Exxon Oil Co. will construct an offshore refinery in the Santa Barbara Channel after Coastline Commission conditions for an onshore plant in Las Flores Canyon were deemed unacceptable. The offshore plan includes a 28,000-ton tanker with deck separation equipment, no gas processing, reinjected gas, and crude oil pumped to refineries in Los Angeles. Start of production is expected in late 1977 or early 1978.

Man shoots self after wild Santa Maria scene

A man fatally shot himself at the Jackpot Service Station on Santa Maria Way after a disturbance that included a gas pump fire and a bomb threat to the adjacent Animal Clinic. Officials said the man died at Santa Maria Valley Hospital with investigators looking into the incident.
