White mob overturns buses at Lamar as desegregation clash erupts

A mob of about 150 white men and women attacked two school buses carrying Black students at Lamar High School in Darlington County South Carolina. Highway patrol fought back with tear gas and night sticks as buses were overturned and officers were assaulted. Officials debated calling in the National Guard while the school remained closed to restore order after the incident linked to forced desegregation.

Governor backs UCSB students in damage dispute

County leaders considered suing the Associated Students of UCSB to seek funds for a $2,000 Kunstler fee after a week of disorders in Isla Vista. Governor Reagan called it unfair to charge UCSB students who did not participate for damages caused by a few storm troopers.

Picket Lines Circulate at Vandenberg Over Paint Contract

Picket lines were stationed at major Vandenberg Air Force Base entrances this morning. Santa Barbara County Building and Trades Council sanctioned the action in protest of Empire Paint Co of Tacoma Washington refusing to sign a union contract and hire non union workers. About 1000 to 1500 workers are affected, per a council official.

Troops Fire On Students In Manila Embassy Protest

In Manila a march on the U.S. Embassy by about 2,000 student demonstrators was halted when Filipino troops in jeeps fired at the crowd. Police reported tracer bullets and Molotov bomb explosions as 12,000 protesters and striking drivers gathered in the city. One demonstrator was wounded, and several were arrested amid the third embassy protest in 13 days.

Injured dolphin dies after rescue at Jalama Beach

A four foot long injured dolphin weighing 50 to 60 pounds with a broken jaw washed ashore at Jalama Beach. Cabrillo High School hikers spotted it and carried it to the Jalama Ranger station where Mrs. Floyd Campbell helped. Oceanographic experts at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo confirmed the dolphin died after transport to Seascape in the Sky. Experts identified it as a Northern Right Whale Dolphin or Northern Great Whale Dolphin, species rarely seen along the California coast.
