About 100,000 Italo Americans gathered at Columbus Circle for Unity Day protests against police FBI and media harassment. As the rally broke up two officers were stabbed. Joseph Colombo Sr. urged unity and claimed the Mafia headstatus.

Brush fires believed set burned 6000 acres north of Los Angeles as 18 residents evacuated from ranch houses. San Franciscquito Canyon blaze near Saugus charred about 3000 acres with 500 firefighters and 50 Forest Service personnel. Shannondale fire swelled to about 2400 acres with 150+ fighters and 25 mph winds. White-hot glow lit the night as crews tackled fires across Dry Canyon, Sierra Highway, and Cabazon area with air tankers assisting.
