Flower Festival ends with glowing tribute

The 18th annual Flower Festival closed with high praise from Lompoc Valley officials. Despite wind and dust, dinners and corn sales hit records, the parade ran smoothly led by Lt. Gov. Ed Reinecke and Flower Festival Queen Judy Snipes, while police reported a quiet weekend aside from minor thefts worth about 120 dollars.

County sees slower rise in net assessed valuation

The 1970-71 county net assessed valuation on the secured tax roll rises to 554,159,125 under County Assessor Harry Holmquist. A recoverable tally and homeowner exemptions add about 12 million, yielding a 15.3 million total that tightens the rate of increase and reduces potential tax revenue pressure. Notices have been mailed, with inspection available after July 1. Appeals may be filed from July 2 to August 26 ahead of fall hearings.

California Legislature Receives 6.59 Billion Budget Plan

A two house conference committee presented the legislature with a 6.59 billion dollar budget for the 1970-71 fiscal year. Mrs Nixon surveys Peru quake disaster after arrival

Mrs Richard M Nixon arrived in Lima to assess the earthquake devastation described as the worst in the Western Hemisphere. She was greeted by Consuelo Velasco and promised the affection of the United States for those affected. She planned a Mass then a flight over the Andes to view the hardest hit areas.

Coastal forecast with strong winds and tides

Fair conditions through Tuesday with highs mid 60s to 70s inland. Tonight's low in the 50s and northwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Small craft warnings for 20 to 35 mph gusts this afternoon. Tuesday tides show highs of 3.4 ft at 10:02 am and 6.2 ft at 8:32 pm with lows near minus 0.6 ft at 3:20 am and 2:08 pm 25 feet.
