22nd Flower Festival Opens With Old And New Features

The 22nd annual Lompoc Valley Flower Festival opens at 8:30 p.m. at Ryan Park with Mayor Stevens and queen Laurie Morrow to speak. Beard-o-Reno contest, Lompoc Centennial Six Mile Race, Bach music at Lompoc High Little Theater, and a two-hour parade Saturday highlight weekend events.

Arson Probe After Vandenberg Village Brush Fires

A string of brush fires in the Mission Hills and Vandenberg Village areas is being investigated as arson. A noon blaze on Mars Avenue burned about two acres and threatened homes, with witnesses saying children ran from the scene. The Mission Hills fire near Rucker Road burned east along ground previously hit by a 15 acre blaze. A $500 reward is offered by the California Division of Forestry for information leading to arrests. County fire and sheriff officials coordinate the probe, with several crews and officers on scene amid reports of possible incendiary devices and recovered evidence. Authorities interview multiple individuals as the investigation continues into the past 30 days of fires.
