Arson Suspect Sought After La Purisima Mission Fire

Arson described as cause of a blaze that burned about 30 acres of La Purisima Mission brushland near Mission Hills. Firefighters from county, Air Force, and city units, aided by a forest service bomber, fought the flames four hours until contained near a ranger residence. Authorities offered a $500 reward for information leading to arrests amid multiple arson cases in the Mission Hills area.

Ehrlichman jury selection proceeds in Washington trial

UPI reports jury selection in the John D. Ehrlichman case went smoothly as 120 potential jurors were questioned by Judge Gerhard Gesell. 23 were disqualified including Washington Post reporter Rudy Maxa and VOA's Lee Valeriani after 40 opening questions. five more were excused in a closed session.

Head On Crash Kills Lompoc Man Harold Robbins

Harold Page Robbins 49 of 1308 E Palmetto Ave died after his northbound car collided head on with a truck at Highway 1, 11 miles south of Lompoc. Ronald Linneman 36 of 1336 W Loquat Ave, driver of the truck, injured with a fractured back and listed in fair condition. Robbins worked at Vandenberg AFB and served with Lompoc Civil Defense Auxiliary Police. Funeral arrangements pending.

Lompoc Park Funds Approved for Beattie Project

The Lompoc Parks and Recreation Commission approved 208 854 for Beattie Park with half from the Z berg Collier Bond Act and half from federal land and water funds. City Council action due July 2. Lompoc receives 104 427 for Beattie Park development and joins Santa Barbara County projects with Waller Park and Lake Los Carneros allocations.

St. Clair opens Nixon defense before House panel

James D. St. Clair began a two day defense of President Nixon before the House Judiciary Committee, asserting confidence Nixon would not be impeached and outlining a focus on no wrongdoing regarding the $75,000 payment to Watergate conspirator E. Howard Hunt. He suggested John W. Dean III would testify the payment was set in motion the day before a Dean Nixon conversation. Dean Burch criticized the committee as unfair for limiting witnesses.
