Court decision won t end schools

The Supreme Court ruled 6 3 that state payments to parents for private school tuition are unconstitutional, with dissents by Burger White and Rehnquist. The United Catholic Conference said the ruling is not a fatal blow to Catholic schools and noted allowable aid channels while other related cases were upheld or struck down. The court also vetoed a Mississippi private academy textbook program and upheld the Hatch Act.

Nixon Secludes Himself as Dean Testimony Unfolds

President Nixon remains in seclusion in San Clemente and does not watch John Dean's Watergate testimony. False wall blamed for many deaths in New Orleans bar fire

Coroner Carl Rabin linked a false plywood wall hiding windows at The Up Stairs Lounge to many of 29 fatalities in a New Orleans French Quarter blaze. Fire marshal Tim Driscoll said the bar complied with codes. 21 escapees used windows, 10 victims were Metropolitan Community Church members.

Senator Milton Marks Backs Richardson After Lounge Fight

Sen. Milton Marks of San Francisco wears a bandage on his upper lip and says he will take no action against Sen. H L Richardson of Arcadia after a one punch fight last Friday. Richardson defends his conduct as being a man while Marks calls the incident demeaning to the Senate and harmful to lawmakers’ image. The brawl occurred in the legislators private lounge near the Senate floor, the first in memory over legislative procedures.
