Auditor predicts county tax levy cut of about 30 cents

County Auditor-Controller Paul Floyd announced a possible 30 cent reduction in the county tax levy after seven days of hearings that trimmed the proposed budget by about 1 million dollars from 9.5 million. The plan includes 20 cent cuts from revenue sharing funds and another 20 cent cut from fund balances, with a 100 million assessed valuation increase adding roughly five cents, totaling about 55 cents versus a earlier 24 cent rise. The board awaits a formal resolution outlining changes, with a 3 percent county employee salary boost estimated at about 31 million. Talks with state authorities about forest fire protection are unlikely to yield a transfer.

State balks at county fire takeover dispute

Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors pressed for the state Division of Forestry to assume county structural and watershed protection effective Nov. 1, but state authorities refused. The budget hearing exposed anger as supervisors argued the move could cut costs, raise morale issues, and alter duty weeks. Fire officials seek economy measures while the state promises watershed funding. Police report notes a car fire on North D Street.
