House accepts resignation of Hays from powerful post

The House, with only a handful present, accepted Wayne Hays resignation as chairman of the Administration Committee. Hays cited health and time constraints amid ethics probes and a grand jury inquiry into Elizabeth Ray allegations. Lompoc District Sees Outsiders Seek School Space

Lompoc Unified School District trustees plan a 7 p.m meeting at Central Administration Building to discuss selling or leasing Miguelito and La Mesa schools to multiple groups. Communists Trail in Italy Senate Vote Early Returns

In early Senate results from Italy's national elections the Christian Democrats held a narrow lead with 41 percent to 33.7 for the Communists and 10 percent for the Socialists among 676 of 73,178 polling places. Chamber results were due later as Italians set a record turnout near 35 million.

GOP nomination hinges on roll call at Kansas City convention

United Press International reports delegate tallies show Ford leading Reagan 1,052 to 950 with 9 uncommitted and 161 to go, while a Gallup poll indicates Carter would beat either Ford 53 to 39 or Reagan 58 to 35 if the election were held now.
