Former Army Lt. William L. Calley faces transfer to Ft. Leavenworth to serve a 10 year murder sentence for My Lai. A 5th Circuit panel refused bond relief and ordered return to custody. Separately NASA will ferry the space shuttle orbiter atop a Boeing 747, replacing earlier engine plans.

Noisy Fourth May Be Last Under Firecracker Ban Delay
The Consumer Product Safety Commission granted a 30 day delay in the nationwide ban on firecrackers and start of new fireworks rules. Firecrackers stay on the market until mid July while a public hearing is held to decide if broader changes are needed. Trade associations cited $50 million in inventories and other objections to the regulations.

New studies in Family Planning Perspectives show fertility in poor black Mexican American and Native American families fell more steeply than in white urban families from 1957–60 to 1967–70.
