In Sacramento Oak Park clashes left three policemen wounded and a reporter stabbed during a confrontation with Negro residents. At least 24 people were arrested. police chief Rooney said the gunfire had subsided by 1 a.m. The brief note covers the incident and ensuing arrests.
A crowd of more than 2,000 attended the annual Portuguese Fiesta, starting with the Chamarita Dance and culminating in a Coronation Mass where Queen Joann Machado was crowned. Little Queen Sharon Luis attended as part of the parade, with Miguelito Park hosting food and entertainment. Frank Silva presided, George Mendez served as vice president, Victor A. Sousa as secretary, and Mrs. Jule Silva chaired the dinner. Music by the San Luis Obispo County Band.
Senate subcommittee investigator Philip Manuel testified that Black Power groups helped spark city and campus riots as steps toward a general revolution. He cited alliances between the Black Panthers SNCC and white revolutionary groups including SDS and noted internal rifts within SDS between a revolutionary union faction and founder Tom Hayden’s camp.

Pompidou will assume office officially Friday at the Elysee Palace, with Mauriac Couve de Murville continuing as caretaker premier until then.
The Supreme Court, in a 7-1 decision, ruled the House cannot exclude Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. from his seat if he meets constitutional qualifications. Chief Justice Warren said the House lacked power to deny his membership, though Congress may discipline members once seated. The opinion addresses Powell’s case from New York Harlem and notes the House’s limited authority over seating.
City officials plan to hire Richard Taylor of Santa Barbara to design a master plan for the southeast four acres of Ryan Park to meet a July 1 federal funding deadline. The plan may include a community center, fitness facilities, arts spaces, a drama workshop, tennis courts and a multipurpose area.
The 140 acre Wolfson purchase southeast of Lompoc in February 1968 and several other high priced land sales trigger a mass reassessment boosting property taxes for ranchers. Officials note sales above farming value and speculate on speculation connected to Lom poc Dam, with more than 12,000 acres affected and tax bills rising across the area.
