Primary election imprints on Santa Barbara history

Santa Barbara County voters shaped a new political landscape in the 1976 June primary. William Wallace won the Third District outright, Leo Martinez led the First District, and Robert Hedlund showed strength in the Fourth. Isla Vista gained county status for the first time, while campaigns featured anti Dodson sentiment in the judiciary race and a notable challenge by Alice Merenbach for a municipal court judgeship. Local results hinted at a powerful environmental bloc 3 2 majority and a potential shift toward pro business campaigns in November.
