American Association of Retired Persons Meet in Recreation Hall

The AARP will hold a meeting Thursday at 1 30 p m in the Recreation Hall at C Street and E Ocean Avenue with Fred Dewey of Long Beach as speaker. Planned discussions include a defensive riding class. Cards and refreshments follow. Lompoc Planning Commission also meets tonight at City Hall to review items and a Planned Development zoning proposal near North Avenue and North A Street.

Press Club to feature UPI's Scott Vernon P. Scott

Lompoc Valley Press Club announces United Press International Hollywood correspondent Scott Vernon P. Scott will speak at the June 12 meeting. The informal non dinner gathering includes cocktails at 7 p.m. and a Q&A session, with venue based on attendance and reservations required by June 9.

City Council to Certify Election Results Tomorrow

City Council will certify last Tuesday's fire improvement bond election which failed to reach the required two thirds vote for a $500,000 bond sale. Fire Chief John Baker urged public education on the need for improvements. YMCA scuba course offered at Cabrillo High starting June 17 with Jim Lucas as instructor and a $38 fee for 15 hours of lectures and 15 hours of water instruction.

Melbourne near collision precedes Evans disaster inquiry

Three days before the USS Frank E. Evans was cut in two, the Australian carrier Melbourne nearly collided with another destroyer. An international board opened hearings in the Philippines to probe the Evans collision, with Rear Adm Crabb citing a 50 foot near miss and new destroyer procedures following the incident.

National Violence Commission urges campus violence plans

The National Violence Commission urged colleges to develop quick decisive response plans for student violence and to use civil police and injunctions when needed. It criticized slow campus action and opposed cutting federal student aid for disorder roles, calling for stronger court powers and preplanned force guidelines.

Obituary: Howard Stewart 52 at Vandenberg AFB Hospital

Howard Stewart 52 died Thursday at Vandenberg AFB Hospital. Graveside rites were held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery. Born February 11, 1917 in Butte Montana he lived at 1308 West Airport and worked for Santa Barbara County. He is survived by wife Glenna and son Carl Ragsdale of Lompoc along with nine grandchildren.

Nigerian Red Cross plane shot down over Biafra region

The Nigerian Sunday Times reports a Red Cross DC7 delivering relief to Biafra was shot down by a Nigerian fighter over Nigerian-held territory. Four crew members were killed. The ICRC protested the attack as unexpected and inexplicable.

Drought in Nepal District Causes Deaths and Starvation Signs

In Sarlahi district near Katmandu, a severe drought has killed at least eight people. Residents report a 1,300 population living on grass roots and tree leaves, with widespread stomach illnesses over the past month.
