Two Air Force Officers in Critical Condition After Santa Maria Collision
Two young Air Force officers are listed in critical condition with major burns after a three car head on crash near Santa Maria. Lt. Frank S. Montavon 22 and 2nd Lt. James W. Zerkle 24 of Vandenberg AFB suffered serious injuries when their car hit Richard Alan Reed of Sacramento then was struck by James T. Ogle 40 of Santa Maria. Reed and Ogle suffered moderate injuries. Zerkle was treated at Marian Hospital then at Vandenberg AFB Hospital. Montavon sustained burns over about 30 percent of his body and was to have surgery.
