Population figures in county census are under review
County Planning Department officials await certification of February’s special census figures conducted by the State Department of Finance. Analyst Clifford Pauley notes current numbers are estimates and expects a certified count near 258 000 to 259 000, with last July state figures at 254 900 and growth slowing due to housing and birth-rate trends. The county hopes higher figures qualify for more state funds.

Sacramento UPI reports a drive to repeal a law allowing school boards after 1971 to raise taxes without voter approval. Gov. Reagan supports the repeal, saying residents should decide property tax increases. Legislative efforts stalled, with Sen. Schmitz's repeal bill failing in the Assembly subcommittee. Ranald J. Kennedy filed the initiative, needing 325,173 signatures to place it on the June 1970 ballot.
